I am a plein air Impressionist painter. I spend as much time as possible outdoors with my easel, palette knife, and oil paints. I try to capture the feeling in the moment, capturing the the shifting light and color. Nature has such variation in depth with intensity of colors. I am in love with the spectacular contrasts and harmonies of sand, sea, and sky and the glorious , brilliant light in Provincetown.

I am passionate about Impressionism, more specifically Claude Monet and other Paris-based artists from the early 1860s. I hope my oil paintings show the same respect for open composition with an emphasis on an accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities that is characterized by this 19th-century art movement. I have exhibited in Truro, MA at the Highland Museum and The Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester NY, at the Clothesline Show. My work is primarily focused on Cape Cod and Western NY landscapes, but I also enjoy doing still life paintings when I can not get outside to paint. Most recently I have been studying at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, MA.

Mary Giammarino, Hilda Neily, John Clayton, and Anne Blair Brown are several of the artists that I have studied with.

This Art Therapy workshop was designed for women, especially mothers. Held in a nurturing environment as a non-judgmental space, where emotions are welcomed and honored. Over four sessions, we navigate the lunar phases like a sacred map. Through breathwork, intuitive movement, presence, and artistic engagement, we open a portal to genuine self-expression. Shared rituals and personal reflections support women in return to themselves, reclaiming their identity, creating time for themselves, holding agency from themselves, and building connections with others who might be on a similar path.

I grew up in the 1970’s in Greenwich Village, NYC.  My father was a writer & my mother owned a vintage clothing store called  “O Mistress Mine”. The clothing and the customers left an impression on me and ultimately inspired my art aesthetic . I have come to love everything vintage, from the fashion, make-up, and designs of everyday objects and products.

The focus of my work largely depicts images of women and beauty products of brands from the past in various mediums. I’ve been revisiting drawings I made and scaling them down into paintings and collages. My work is graphic in style using pen and ink with bright colored backgrounds or stretched vintage patterned fabric.

My ongoing series of Bathing Beauties reflects nostalgic memories of family, friends and experiences of yesteryear. My series "Carnies” draws its inspiration from the physical abilities and bravery of carnival performers living their lives as  “outsiders” while traveling from town to town, on the fringe of a “normal” society.

My influences include Diane Arbus, Ben Shaun, Lisette Model and Andy Warhol.

The Summer of ’24 - Figures and Places
by Neil Korpinen

Opening Reception: Friday, June 27 from 5 - 7 PM

On Exhibit through July 7
The Commons
46 Bradford Street, Provincetown

At the end of last summer I began a group of paintings that seemed tinged with nostalgia. In this current era of chaos and disbelief the theme has taken on an additional meaning. Though the setting is at the beach the subdued palette lends a tonal, atmospheric quality to the landscape. Lone figures are mostly looking away, remembering the good carefree times of the past summer and perhaps years gone by. The Summer of ’42 movie is a good coming of age story but The Summer of ’24 is about looking back.

End of Season, o/c, 40” x 30”

A second group of paintings includes portraits of friends in a studio setting, each done over the course of several sittings. The models, though sometimes nude, are not objects of fantasy or desire, just real people posing in a real studio, projecting friendship even while enduring the boredom that often comes with modeling. Thank you my friends!

BFF, o/c, 36” x 36”

The third group of paintings continues the theme of Figure in Place, though now the setting is a swimming pool. Whenever a picture shows a pool with swimmer the mind naturally goes right to a certain celebrated artist so these paintings can be considered an homage to David Hockney. When my friend Michael Childers, who is in turn friends with Hockney, saw my paintings he insisted on taking my portrait for this show, recreating the poolside scene with the models. Thank you Michael for the fabulous photograph!

Neil Korpinen has enjoyed a long career as an artist and interior designer. A RISD grad, he hails from nearby South Carver where his family has grown cranberries for 100 years (and he claims to have been coming to Provincetown for about that long). Neil has studied painting and drawing locally at FAWC, PAAM, The Hawthorne Barn and Castle Hill.

Eight years ago Neil and husband Rick Erickson restored an antique home in Provincetown. They split their time between here and Palm Springs.

Join artist and musician Mike Sullivan for a hands-on maker’s workshop focused on creating masks, headpieces, and accessories for this year’s Flora + Fauna of Beech Forest fashion show.

The session will begin with a live demonstration on mask-making and mold techniques, followed by time and space for participants to begin crafting their own pieces. Whether you're envisioning a dramatic headpiece, an abstract mask, or intricate accessories, this is a chance to develop work that complements your look for the show.

We’ll provide a wide range of materials—from natural elements to decorative and found objects—and welcome your creativity, experimentation, and bold ideas. Mike will be on hand throughout the session to guide, inspire, and support your creative process.

We’re also planning a follow-up workshop closer to the show in August, where participants can return to continue building their creations—especially those incorporating birds and more elaborate designs.

“Masks are a means by which human groupings attempt to communicate their dignity and sense of purpose.”
Gary Edson, Masks and Masking

About the Artist:
Mike Sullivan is an artist and musician whose work spans sculptural headwear, portrait photography, and collaborative performance. Known for pieces that combine natural elements like feathers and branches with jewels, mirrors, and found objects, Mike’s work lives in the tension between decadence and decay, balance and chaos. He has been deeply immersed in queer creative communities in both Provincetown and New York City, producing concerts and multimedia fundraisers rooted in theatricality and expression.

I have been an artist working in Provincetown and Connecticut for the last 8 years.  I work primarily in oil and gouache, but have also been experimenting with collage recently.  I love the landscape and streetscapes in Provincetown and these are frequent subjects in my paintings, as are the rural landscape of New England.  I am often not a careful painter and I value that spontaneity and the energy it gives a piece of work.  I try to capture quick snapshots or stories in my paintings and to make a simple, strong impression.

BARELY DOMESTIC BY AMY KANDALL

Opening Reception: Friday, July 11 from 5 - 7 PM
On Exhibit through July 21
The Commons
46 Bradford Street, Provincetown

The mixed media exhibition by Amy Kandall’s entitled Barely Domestic will be on display at the Commons in Provincetown from July 9th through July 21st

The subject matter of the exhibition explores an alter ego of a feral bear and a domestic girl who support each other through trials and tribulations of transformation. It is a story that takes place inside a domestic environment. Flipping ideas of what is inside and outside, what is real and what is theater, what is seen, felt and imagined. It is a story about spending real time with a spirit animal. The two dance, read books, play pretend and take turns emoting.

The exhibition contains small to large scale ceramics sculpture,  a series of mixed media ceramic wall dioramas and large scale oil paintings honoring the heroic bear. Amy Kandall is the founder  of Truro Clay Works; a community ceramic studio  open for classes. She has her BFA from SUNY Purchase and her MFA from Bard College. She has been an art educator in our local school system for over 25 years.

These sea observations were painted plein air from the exact same spot along the waters’ edge of Cape Cod Bay in Provincetown, MA  no matter the conditions.

My intention was to quickly capture the ever-changing energy of the sea, sky, and tides creating a sensory moment in time, marked by sunlight shifts and tidal patterns.

I began this series in 2017 as a warmup to my painting practice, which evolved into assembling a visual ‘almanac ‘with a target of 365 ‘studies.’   I completed the challenge in 2023 with 375 + journal entries.

Each piece includes a ledger of the weather, date + time, temperature, and other conditions, (and occasional current event) written on the reverse side.

Painted in oil, each piece is on 300# Fabriano cold-pressed paper, hand torn to retain the deckled edge, and prepped with 3 coats of gesso.

With each study, I compiled an almanac of the sea and me.

Susan is inspired by light and sky; she captures the beauty of a scene through its interplay with its surroundings. She lives in the Boston area and, in summers on Cape Cod, she enjoys painting plein air and participating in workshops with other artists. Susan is a physician, retired from a career caring for cancer patients. Now, after decades of focus on science and medicine, she is engaged in the creative process of applying paint to panel. Primarily a impressionist landscape painter, she also enjoys painting lighthearted whimsical pieces to lift the spirit.

FOR THE LOVE OF TREES
Works by Elani Carr

On Exhibit: through August 4
Opening Reception: Friday, July 25 | 5:00–7:00 PM

I've had a penchant for photography ever since I can remember, requesting my first camera on my 7th birthday. My parents rewarded me with a state-of-the-art Polaroid, which was simply the coolest thing! We could witness photos come to life from virtually nothing! My work has been through many iterations, including the pursuit of sharp, crisp imagery that is the mainstream standard. These days, however, I am far more interested in capturing emotion, mood and a sense of mystery as if to question, 'What do I see? How did this shot come to be?' Using various techniques like intentional camera movement (ICM) and multiple exposures, coupled with digital tools, I invite viewers to question the images I create and to explore the feelings they evoke. In this show, I am sharing mostly alternative type imagery with a few traditional shots mixed in as accents. The subject of trees came about on the many solo walks I take here on the outer Cape, mostly during the more desolate winter months when the trees' bare bones reveal their naked essence. While many of the tree images hail from the Cape, there are several from upstate NY and some from more temperate climates including Los Angeles, Florida's Gulf coast and San Pancho, Mexico. I hope you enjoy the show and take away the ethereal sense that trees inspire.

My current work centers on the assemblage and collage of repurposed metal, Provincetown driftwood, and a variety of found objects gathered during my walks and wanderings. I weave together these materials—each with its own history—through an intuitive process that balances color, texture, and pattern. Guided by shape, size, and a sense of play, I allow the composition to unfold organically, letting the materials themselves influence the direction of each piece.

I also make vessels out of layered paper and wood, combining simple materials to build textured forms. Each piece comes together through wrapping, layering, and sometimes tearing back again. I let the process guide me, again choosing shapes and colors based on feel and balance rather than a fixed plan. My hope is that each one feels grounded, honest, and open to interpretation, like small meditations in physical form.

I hold a degree in Applied Art from Iowa State University, with a focus in fiber and design, which continues to inform my approach to layering and surface. My studio at Whaler’s Wharf in Provincetown  is open by appointment, where I welcome conversations about the work and am happy to discuss personalized commissions. Each piece is a meditation on place, transformation, and the beauty found in the unexpected.

I began working on three-dimensional art in a metal sculpture class, becoming enamored with the shapes I could conjure up using wire mesh. I relied initially on a serendipitous construction process, creating random forms and experimenting with new materials, surfaces and color. The Covid years impacted my practice in two significant ways: the free form construction of earlier work gave way to very structured rhythmic curves, while playful color choices were replaced by a palette inspired by “place” - primarily the colors of Provincetown and the marshes where we spent a good part of our time before moving here permanently two years ago.

My dog Bond and I walk the stretch of Province Lands Road from the breakwater to Herring Cove Beach at any given time of the day, at any given time of the year. As tides change and one season’s palette gives way to another, it is a landscape that can be lush and green, or cold and desolate, but always beautiful and calming. I try to capture the rhythm of that change and the echos of that landscape in the new work presented in this exhibition.

Artist Statement

I have a lifelong interest in art and technology. My engineering profession and expertise enable me to seamlessly incorporate technology into my artistic endeavors. With conventional media, I have painted using oils, monoprints, and watercolors, but more recently, I have focused on pastels. I began incorporating computers into my work as soon as they became available. Paint software, 3D modeling and algorithms introduce innovative creative methods and effects. My paintings feature subjects such as landscapes, flowers, abstracts, and various other themes. For this show, I am featuring prints of digital paintings and hand painted pastels.

Through the lens of my fascination with color, patterns and textures, the paintings are created using acrylic paint employing layering techniques often incorporating gold leaf, charcoal, ink pencils and collage. It begins without a roadmap or objective, but with each mark it winds its way to resolution. Images may loosely be informed by the dunes, grasses, and beaches of the Outer Cape as well as my travels to unique landscapes around the world. In my paintings you may find references to the land, water, sky and light.

The paintings emerge from an intuitive process linked to a place of deep connection to nature and self. As a physician and educator, my best work happened when I could tap into my intuitive awareness to use in concert with medical knowledge to build connection to others. As an artist, when I can immerse myself in the act of creating and allow judgement to step aside, I connect to a place of wholeness and wonder. It is then that I create my best work. I aspire to have the work similarly forge connection, sparking curiosity and joy in the viewer.

I love to paint outside. To see the changing colors of the sky, the sea and the land is always exciting for me, especially here in Provincetown. When I start a painting at 2 pm and finish it at 4 or 5 pm, then the whole afternoon is in it. The process of painting is the real excitement. I follow the different formations of clouds and differnt  colors of the sea, changing the painting until a situation satisfies me. Going back to the same spot and paint the same view to different times over and over is for me like meditation on life itself.

MICHAEL GUY: Just for fun, in 1979, I asked a friend to take a snapshot of me at the beach wearing a red bikini and a paper cutout of Santa Claus’ face as a mask. I made a few prints for friends as Christmas cards, never imagining that for 45 years I would be wracking my brain every year to come up with a new goofy idea for celebrating the holidays. Other than the fourth card in 1982 or the Smackdown audience in 2016, I’m the only person — or all the people — in the photos, which have been taken by friends, my husband Padric, or often by myself. Frequent collaborators are my friends Frosty and Rudolph. Though Photoshop has proven useful in recent years for a little assistance — and it’s pretty obvious when I’ve used it — I was really there at those locations in those costumes with those props. Happy holidays!

I am an Outer Cape artist who, like many, came to Cape Cod for a respite from city life…and never left. I uprooted a longtime existence in Washington, DC for the Outer Cape and its surreal landscape, expansive shorelines, and magical sky.

My work is focused on translating onto canvas the energy, love, and magic I feel as I walk in the woods, the dunes, and along the bay and ocean shorelines, all while being mesmerized by the Cape’s big, beautiful, ever-changing sky.

If I had to sum up my work in three words, they would be: Life in technicolor.

Roger Braimon was professionally trained as a figurative artist in printmaking and photography at Cornell University (BFA) and oil painting at University of Pennsylvania (MFA). As a fabric colorist in the textile industry and later a graphic designer in beauty, he developed his interest in abstract color harmonies, patterns, and composition. His art progressed from oils, gouache, and collage to watercolors – landing on a medium that provides portability with the immediacy of impression. One of his driving interests is balancing unpredictability and precision in his depiction of familiar places in Provincetown and New York City.

MAKING LIGHT: SUSTAINING CREATIVITY IN DIFFICULT TIMES

Making Light: A Conversation with Artists on Sustaining

Creativity, Courage, and Connection in Difficult Times In dark times, artists make light. It’s no secret that culture and the arts are under attack. We’ve now had some time since the advent of the new régime in the United States to think about what it means to us as artists. We’re looking at a substantial drop in funding, possible silencing mechanisms, and a culture of fear that stifles creativity.

Come and join the conversation as nine local artists, writers, musicians, and performers share their plans for maintaining their various artistic practices in the face of this repression and advance ideas that can be adopted by others for maintaining culture in dark times.

Panelists include Jeannette de Beauvoir, Scott Cunningham, Jay Critchley, and Susan Lambert.

This is meant to be a real conversation, so come with ideas for finding our way through the darkness. The theme for this session is: What are your artistic intention(s), and how can you stay aligned with them?

The event at The Provincetown Commons on May 20 at 7:00pm is free and open to the public. Come share your ideas for keeping the arts alive!

We will continue the conversations through the fall on June 17, July 22, August 19, andSeptember 16.

For more information, contact Jeannette de Beauvoir at jeannette@womr.org.

"Crossings", as a title emerged from gazing across Cape Cod Bay from North Truro at Provincetown and from my repeated walks across the Brooklyn Bridge.  As I thought more about the word “Crossing” and selected these paintings I realized that this is thematic of what I am drawn to and what I choose to paint.

I have always prided my self on my ability to cross boundaries reaching across cultures, disciplines, institutions and industries to learn, build alliances and engage with others.

Whether it is looking across to another shore, crossing a field, exploring a new country or breaking a rule or cultural norm, the experience of crossing is one of taking a chance, exploring, reexamining the past, expanding horizons, experiencing the new and maximizing opportunity.

I hope you find that each painting I have included provides an expanded view of place, culture and perspective.

I am a landscape and figurative artist committed to developing awareness of self and others through visual imagery. I believe that our enhancing awareness allows us to better connect to the natural world and to each other. I am interested in how perception, language, imagery and culture shape who we are and how we see each other and the world around us.

The exhibition presents a body of work with two perspectives: the sun or moon rising or setting over water, and the East Bay and High Head Dunes in different seasons and times of day, real and imaginary.

This series of monoprints involves a two-part process; the first step is direct print making from a plate or a silk screen, and the second is hand painting on the print with watercolor pastel, ink, and/or gouache. The resulting images, intended and unpredictable, offer both a foundation and an overlay of color and expression.

My regular forays from my home in Truro into Provincetown captivate the spirit and eye. The scene shifts by the hour, the day, the season, the orientation, and the weather, sometimes subtly and often dramatically. New combinations of light, shape, and color transform the water, parabolic dunes, and sky.

Similarly, there is intrigue and magic within the ephemeral and dynamic nature of sunlight and moonlight on water. As we live within this landscape, light from these round celestial bodies  travels, creating dynamic features of our days, nights, and horizons.

UN-COMMON, A GROUP SHOW

UN-Common, a group show by the studio artists of 74 Shank Painter Road

Opening Reception: Friday, May 16 from 5 - 7 PM
On Exhibit through May 26
The Commons
46 Bradford Street, Provincetown

The Provincetown Commons, hosts UN-Common, the first group exhibition by 7 artists whose main thing IN-common may be their shared studio space/quasi social experiment, called “The Community Studios at 74 Shank Painter Road,” an annex to The Provincetown Commons in Provincetown, MA. This week-long display of vibrant paintings, collage and mixed media, by Ali Blake, Elspeth Slayter, Janine Evers, Jeff Osmond, Karen Miller, Dan Wagner and Mallory White (in memoriam), with an opening Friday, May 16th, from 5-7pm, at 46 Bradford Street, Provincetown, MA. The artists will attend.

“It’s kind of like the show Big Brother, but without the drama,” quips painter Jeff Osmond, when discussing the shared studios with half walls and no doors. Entering their second year together in the space, the artists, many who had not met before, have managed to develop a synergy much like a family– individual to the max, yet dedicated to each other’s artistic practice.

This individuality is showcased in 2-dimensional works that feature realist and abstract, color, and black and white, texture and crisp interpretations of life in and around this quirky Outer Cape community. Come, be captivated.

Featured Artists:

Ali Blake (mixed media) Blake is a multidisciplinary artist and designer who works both in abstraction and in representation. Often working in charcoal, Blake’s portraits and compositions evidence a lush sentiment to be relished by the viewer. Her newer mixed media works combine drawing, painting, printmaking and collage in consideration of spherical windows on the world. Blake has participated in shows at The Commons, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Provincetown Business Guild, and Four Eleven Gallery.

Janine Evers (painting) Evers’ paintings are colorful abstractions that explore the structure of things both internally and externally. Her focus is on inventing a personal imagery of evolving organic forms, the relationships of color and how images exist together in space. She examines the interactions of form, striving to create a sense of connectedness while still maintaining the individuality of the forms within the framework of the painting. Currently, she is represented by Four Eleven Gallery, Provincetown, MA. Evers has participated in shows at The Commons, the Mary Heaton Vorse House and a juried show at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.

Karen Miller (painting) Miller’s current body of acrylic paintings and collages focuses primarily on women, and their relationships with power, gender and with each other. Her work depicts the strength, confidence and independence women draw from their bonds of friendship. Miller’s paintings explore the complex and often contradictory relationship between femininity and power, specifically through the charged imagery of women and guns. These works are not intended as simple endorsements or condemnations, but rather as visual investigations into the multifaceted nature of these symbols. The gun, a potent symbol of force and control, is juxtaposed with the traditionally perceived vulnerability and nurturing qualities often associated with womanhood. Miller has participated in shows at The Commons, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, DNA Gallery, AM Zehnder Gallery and Four Eleven Gallery.

Jeff Osmond (Painting) Osmond’s work, whether abstract or realistic, is marked by a meticulous attention to detail. He is known for his ability to blend striking execution with emotionally resonant compositions. Osmond often explores themes that are surreal, provocative, and visually arresting. Currently, he is represented by 346 Gallery in Provincetown, MA. Osmond has participated in shows at The Commons, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and the Provincetown Business Guild.

Elspeth Slayter (printmaking & painting) Informed by the work of the new casualist art movement Slayter’s process-focused work uses off-kilter compositions and unexpected/imperfect textures. Her work focuses on one’s ongoing familiarity with internal and external consciousness and how memory is managed. As with aged graffiti-covered walls, her creative process explores the progression of color and shape with the embrace of unpredictable movements and combinations. Currently, she is represented by Four Eleven Gallery, Provincetown, MA. Slayter has participated in solo and group shows at The Commons, a juried show at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, The Winfisky Gallery (Salem, MA), Edgewater Gallery (Middlebury, VT), Galley West Art Gallery (Orleans, MA) and the Provincetown Business Guild.

Dan Wagner (painting) Rejecting ‘Pretty pictures, his paintings are abstract in spirit. Noting that there are always figures in his work, he is consistently attracted to “strange things,” and abstractions. His work is informed by Hans Hofmann’s push-and-pull color theory. Wagner has participated in solo and group shows at The Commons, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Provincetown Business Guild and at Sarah Jessica Fine Art, Provincetown, MA.

Mallory White (painting) With work ranging from representational to abstract, all subjects are fair game. Striving for clean lines, White's work is portrait-like in nature. Her body of work consistently searches for light and the magic of color. White passed away early in 2025, and will be honored as part of this exhibit. Osmond has participated in shows at The Commons, the Provincetown Art Association, the Jo Hay Gallery, and Museum and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. https://www.paintingsbymallory.com/artist-profile---statement

About The Community Studios at 74 Shank Painter: Under the auspices of The Provincetown Commons, The Community Studios at 74 Shank Painter was founded in 2024 as much-needed studio space for Outer Cape artists. The late Mallory White, a former emerging artist at The Commons, located the space and spearheaded the effort to secure this hard-to-find type of space. Created with the goal of increasing the availability of art studio spaces on the Outer Cape, The Community Studios at 74 Shank Painter allows for a total of eight artists to work in a collaborative, open plan environment.

About The Commons: The Commons is a collaborative workspace for artists and small businesses, serving the Cape and islands year round. The Commons is an intergenerational community, open to established Provincetown artists and entrepreneurs while welcoming the next generation. Building on the traditions and strengths of Provincetown’s history, we’re committed to supporting the town’s effort to both preserve and grow the arts as a vital part of our economy and as a facet of our tourism. Their goal is to help build Provincetown’s capacity as a technological hub for media arts and new types of economic innovation.

HERESY: A SCRAPBOOK OF REBELLION

It’s Happening. Thursday, May 8, 2025, 7:00pm, marks the official beginning of the 1st Annual Outsiders Festival atThe Provincetown Commons. In the spirit of the Sun Gallery and the HCE Gallery, it’s a Happening like no other as the the past and the present cross paths for a look into the future utitilizing AI and AR digital technologies. Music by Steinway. Art by fluxus. Provincetown Collagists by Karen Cappotto and the Camp Provincetown alumni.

There was John Henry and Pecos Bill, Harry Kemp, and AI Hansen. Yes. Create your own mythos.

“The happening is the most delightful and exciting challenge to theatrical deadweight in may a year. Increasingly the young people put them on, while the theater institution wonders where everybody is and whatever became of Broadway. This book is the first book that attempts to deal in a concise way with all the aspects of the happening and its related forms and analogues. Al Hansen, one of America’s leading pop artists and a pioneer in the development of the happening, here presents his delightful account of what this very lively medium is all about. No work of scholarship, the intent of this book is to inform, to provoke original thought on the part of the reader, and perhaps to suggest that he try his own experiments.” – Al Hansen – “A Primer of Happenings & Time/Space Art” – 1965

THE ART OF SPECTACULARISM

“No Sniping: Representing the healthy troublemakers is Al Hansen, a young New York artist who directs the HCE (Here Comes Everybody) Gallery, Provincetown’s best, and shows his own elegant and witty collages at the more far-out East End Gallery. “The Art Association is a great case of artertiosclerosis,” Hansen says. For him the uniqueness of Provincetown as an art colony is the selling aspect. “East Hampton and other summer places don’t sell,” he points out. “There are just collectors sniping away in the dunes, trying to get works cheap.” – August 24, 1964, Newsweek Magazine

Come the summers of 1959 and 1960, the seeds were being sown for a full blown high water mark in the canon of American cultural enlightenment. We got woke in the early 20th century (the 19-teens Cultural Moment , the Roaring 20s), when any momentum was conveniently interupted by two World Wars. It was all just dress rehearsal for what was to now nostagically referred to as the “60s.”

Visionaries in the world of the art business kept one foot in a cutting edge New York City market while mixing business and pleasure at the tip of Cape Cod. When Picasso was first shown in the USA, Alfred Steiglitz apologetically returned Pablo his work after a cold reception from art patrons and museum curators alike. Provincetown gallerists like Ivan Karp and Nathan Halper held bunny ears as the reward for seeing Warhol and Lichtenstein as the future while buyers missed the opportunity to snatch up the early work of the Pop revolution for short change. There were no red dots at the HCE in those early days. The art of future Provincetown greats like Robert Motherwell and Milton Avery had still yet to get the traction that would later send the value of their work into the stratosphere.

There was enough wiggle room in these post-WWII, pre-internet days where it would be hard to prove or disprove much of anything coming out of many a man’s mouth and great artists like Joseph Beuys were just as crafty at creating their own mythos as they were at putting paint to canvas and this is where the story of Al Hansen begins.

The seven-month-old Hansen skipped the pacifier for he’d rather a No. 2 pencil to play with. The precocious young artist with the Prince Valiant hairdo, recalled his early foray into art as, “looked upon a suspect.” His first performance art piece involved tossing the teacher’s chair and personal belongings out the window along with all the chalkboard erasers when the teacher briefly left the classroom unattended. Growing up in Jamaica, Queens sealed his his fate as a juveline deliquent often joyriding borrowed cars with neighbor and future author Jimmy Breslin, the Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight , as his co-pilot.

“I would constantly lose interest, because I was probably always being held back to the mien of the norm, which is one of the basic things the matter with American education.” – Al Hansen – Archives of American Art – 1973

BUILDING A THRIVING OUTER CAPE - TOGETHER | WITH CAREY DAVIDSON

You’re Invited: Building a Thriving Outer Cape – Together
Date:
Wednesday, April 30 from 5 - 6 PM
Where: The Commons
Registration required: event is free

We’re inviting Outer Cape business owners, managers, and community leaders to a 60-minute interactive session that blends live workshop with open discovery. In this session, you’ll get a firsthand experience of the 5A Method, a powerful, practical framework designed to reduce burnout, repair communication breakdowns, and strengthen trust—within your teams, with your customers, and across our local economy.

You’ll also help shape the future of how we support businesses and organizations on the Cape. We’ll introduce one of the biggest challenges facing our workforce today—and show you a proven, community-rooted solution that’s already creating ripple effects in workplaces across the country. Then, we’ll open the floor to hear from you. What do you need most right now? How can this framework meet those needs and strengthen our shared community?

Whether you run a seasonal business, a nonprofit, or a town department, this session is designed to support you—and give you tools to bring ease, connection, and sustainability back to your workplace.

Before You Arrive
To get the most from this experience, please take 10 minutes to complete the 5A Questionnaire (link below) and bring your archetype numbers with you. You’ll also receive a 2-minute video introducing the method—watch it before the session so you’re ready to dive right in.

About Carey Davidson
Carey Davidson is the founder of Harmin Labs and author of The Five Archetypes. She’s worked with leaders at Microsoft, Starbucks, and Tony Robbins, helping them break patterns that lead to burnout, stress, and miscommunication. Her 5A Method combines neuroscience, behavioral science, and 5,000 years of wisdom into a system that creates measurable, lasting change in how people relate—and how organizations thrive.

Yes, you can have your quick fix.

Carey focuses on relationships and systems, transforming dynamics so value, connection, and revenue generation happen naturally, even under stress.

  • Static personality systems focus on individual traits in isolation—they don’t show how those traits interact dynamically in real-world relationships or under stress.

  • 5A shows how one person’s stress response triggers another’s shutdown or overreaction—and how those dynamics compound conflict and inefficiency.

  • 5A shows you how to shift those dynamics easily, instantly, and entirely, not just how to adapt to dysfunction.

MAKING LIGHT: SUSTAINING CREATIVITY IN DIFFICULT TIMES

Making Light: A Conversation with Artists on Sustaining Creativity, Courage, and Connection in Difficult Times

April 21 at 7:00pm
The Provincetown Commons
Free and open to the public.

In dark times, artists make light.

It’s no secret that culture and the arts are under attack. We’ve now had some time since the advent of the new régime in the United States to think about what it means to us as artists. We’re looking at a substantial drop in funding, possible silencing mechanisms, and a culture of fear that stifles creativity.

Come and join the conversation as 10 local artists, writers, musicians, and performers share their plans for maintaining their various artistic practices in the face of this repression, and perhaps advance ideas that can be adopted by others for maintaining culture in dark times.

Presenter: Jeannette de Beauvoir is a novelist/poet and the host of Arts Week on WOMR.

Panelists include Mike Carroll (gallery director), David Drake (director/actor), Sheryl Jaffe (handmade paper artist), Steve Desroches (writer), Susan Lambert (musician/actor), Helen Grimm (artist), Scott Cunningham (actor/performer), and Peter Donnelly (musician).

Come share your ideas for keeping the arts alive!

About Mark Del Franco

Mark Del Franco creates images that walk the line between the abstract and the real. Drawing upon such varied influences as graffiti, Japanese wood-cuts, the Neo-Impressionists, and graphic novel inking, he creates images that evoke memories and reflection. Through color, shape and line, he hopes the observer will find his work engaging and discover something new every time they look.

Like Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, the images are intended to be viewed from a distance, allowing your eye to "mix" the colors into an almost realist form. As you view the gallery, create some distance between your eye and the screen for a better idea what you will see once a piece is hung on the wall.

Artist Statement

I traveled to The Yucatan Gulf of Mexico, Merida, and small fishing village in Chellem, Mexico . The light was ‚ mind-blowing‚ I painted small watercolors which worked well for travel. The people were so humble, resilient, and festive I tried to bring those qualities to my paintings. I also added a few larger paintings of Mexico in oils. Plus some from Cape Cod. And Portugal where I visited last November. Although different places they all are connected by the sea, food, heritage celebration if only!!!

ANDREW JACOB

Andrew Jacob is a New England based artist, surfer and explorer who draws inspiration from the ocean, nature, comic books, graffiti, 80’s horror films, 60’s psychedelia and television. His vibrantly colored paintings playfully translate ancient symbols into potent dreamscapes. Using bold lines, Jacob carves distinct forms into repetitive swaths of color and turns disparate patterns into recognizable icons. With deft compositional tension, his rhythmic icons are painted atop a background of explosive acrylic and enamel drips that lay bare the disorder from which order may emerge.

COLOR AND COMPOSITION

Provincetown Commons and the Community Development Partnership are pleased to announce the 2025 Creative Development Series. Over the course of six weeks, the two organizations will offer six free courses to individuals seeking to enhance the business side of their creative practice. This year, the workshops directly stem from the results of a community survey that asked what needs folks want to focus on now. The classes will all have a “learn, then do” component to them. Participants will hear from artists and creative workers, and each session will have time devoted to students practicing the work themselves. All courses are free; registration is recommended.

COLOR AND COMPOSITION

Our last class will lean into some creative practice with Color and Composition, featuring Jo Hay and Jim Broussard. The two local artists will team up to discuss color theory, the effects of building color on a canvas, and composition of a work. Participants will experiment with swatches of color and various compositional arrangements. Perhaps our most hands-on workshop of the series, this class will allow participants to try out something new and receive feedback on their experimentation.

PARTIAL RETROSPECTIVE w/ NEW WORK BY LINDA OHLSON GRAHAM

All of you have heard me share re: the 'Vision for Peace, calmer weather, and widespread healing' I truly feel in my I have been given.

Much has been maturing since Sept. 12th 2001, when:

 Linda's Formula for World Peace

At 4am on the morning of September 12th, 2001, after seeing on TV (the day before) the second plane come around the back of and explode into the World Trade Center building, Linda created a new piece of art in a 30" by 40" frame. Later on the 12th, Linda asked permission to remove several photographs and a 20" by 24" piece of art with Writing that were on exhibit in a long hallway leading from the parking lot into the Cape Cod 5 Bank in Orleans, MA and replace them with this 'new' piece of art with Writing.

The new piece of art shared two thoughts:

One is a question Linda wrote … to begin a Provincetown Poetry Festival 'master class' Writing exercise: ……….v……v……v….. 'Has thE time arrived when Humanity is able to digest the phenomenal REALity of just how simple it could be to shift the Earth's vibration?'

The other shares about the French philosopher Teilhard de Chardin who created the word 'noosphere' to describe the layer of thought that hovers above nature and acts as a universal consciousness . . . a 'thinking envelope' that our thoughts go up to and then are reflected back. … Linda's philosophy is that if Humanity . . . consciously … with intention, either individually or collectively, could quiet our thinking Mind(s) for just a few minutes daily … what would be reflected back would be moRe peaceful, moRe calm, moRe loving.

Included in this piece of art: Incrementally I believe this is a 'Formula for Global PEACE' … and a way (perhaps THE WAY) to calm our Earth's weather patterns.

Artist Statement

I paint because I am compelled to. I have a primitive compulsion to create paintings. My paintings are influenced by my walks that I take every day on the Cape. They represent internal as well as external landscapes that exist within and around us all. These paintings are not a horizon line but rather a section of a circle. Like life, they are infinite. I reduced the shapes down to fields of color. I use a push/pull method of design as a means of expression. I also created a series of acrylic paintings. For these, I let the paintings take me where they wanted to go.

About

I was born in a suburb outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I attended college at Point Park College and received a B.S. in Business Management with an emphasis in Fashion Merchandising in 1995. I then attended college at The Fashion Institute of Technology and finished studies there in 1997.

I moved to Provincetown, MA full time in 2001 and started painting as a means to express my inner musings. I am inspired by nature and the beauty in mundane objects such as Ziplock baggies, plastic storage containers and old television sets. I create installations, performance pieces, paintings, drawings, collages, architectural drawings and videos. My work will continue to evolve since I am unable to stay static.

MARINE DEBRIS AND GHOST GEAR: COASTAL ART/ASSEMBLAGE Exhibition

MARCH 29 – Apr 14, 2025
MARINE DEBRIS AND GHOST GEAR: COASTAL ART/ASSEMBLAGE Exhibition

Coastal Art Collage - Montage - Assemblage: An open group show incorporating or referencing coastal materials, addressing themes of coastal life and resiliency.

A project by Mark Adams, in collaboration withthe Center for Coastal Studies and the students of CORNELL UNIVERSITY. Sculptures by selected artworks by MOSH Studios of Orleans MA (Adrienne Shishko and Suzanne Moseley), Alex Buchanan, Nick Nobili, Commons studio artists and community contributions. The exhibit is expected to change and grow throughout the days.

Marine Debris and Ghost Gear are a continuing hazard to all marine life, the quality of coastal habitat and the health of us all. Whales, seals and sea turtles become entangled, plastic bags suffocate and micro plastics contaminate all forms of life. The Center for Coastal Studies Marine Debris program under staffers Laura Ludwig and Fritz McGirr as well as hundreds of volunteers. They cover beaches and islands from Boston Harbor to all of Cape Cod and southeast New England. They also work with the fishing community to develop safer methods to support sustainable fisheries.

Support their work by volunteering, reducing your use of water bottles and other disposables, and recycling.

Assemblage describes the 3-dimensional art of combining scavenged and non-art materials into sculpture. It originated in part in the movements of Dada and Surrealism in the early 20th century but has also been an American tradition of vernacular and outsider art. Many people design their own spaces using found materials, gnomes and garden art. One of our goals is to repurpose plastics and lost fishing gear in a way that draws attention to their hazards and removes them permanently from the the natural environment.

MARCH 29-30, 2025 COMMUNITY MAKER WORKSHOPS - ALL WELCOME

12:00-4:00 pm each day

Come to the Commons and build your own art piece using rope, plastics, water bottles, lobster trap material and styrofoam that the Center for Coastal Studies Volunteer Beach Brigades have recovered from beaches near and far. Finished assemblage materials may be added to the exhibition in progress.

Mark Adams and other CCS staff will be on hand to encourage you.
