Two years ago, I took a class on Cyanotype printing with Tyrus Clutter at the Appleton Museum of Art and became obsessed with the technique, images and results. Since then, I have been experimenting with different types of materials - bleach, coffee, color, encaustic and the entire process. Additional teachings of John Clayton, (Oils) Kathleen Warren, (Cyanotype & Encaustic), Sue Primeau, (Watercolor), Linda Blondheim, (Acrylic) and Charles Eady (Silkscreen) have been instrumental to my craft. Hoping my work brings happiness and an abundance of color to art enthusiasts.
Mr. Schleicher was born and raised in Cheshire CT. He continued his education in Florida at Saint Leo University and received his BA and MBA. After a career in healthcare marketing and one in real estate, Rich switched to a life of creativity and joy in the world of art. He has taken several years of painting classes of landscapes in Provincetown as well as his home town of Ocala, Florida. Painting in the impressionistic style is his goal to be mastered. Expanding his love for color, Rich has taken classes in various forms of printmaking, watercolor painting, encaustic, sculpture, and assemblage. Mr. Schleicher plans to expand his knowledge and skills in creating various types of art. This years show at the Commons will be Rich’s fifth art show including a solo show this past November.

I am inspired by what is visual. As a former Industrial designer, Shape, Form, Materials and Color create desire. Water plays a big part in my inspiration in composition. I gravitate toward vessels or objects that hold water. In my landscapes and in my life, bodies of water have always been near. Coastlines, lakes, intercoastals, moors, all inspire creativity. The sun, and the atmosphere on the Cape is unique, as you have sky, water, sand, that creates reflective light. That light throws color into the highlights, low lights, shade and reflective light on a surface. Water is also can evoke a sense of wellness, calm, serenity, and is reflective. Working with a palette knife maintains my ability to stay loose, keep my colors pure, and allows me to layer unmuddied color notes. I begin my painting with masses of color, seeing how each color must relate. As I complete my painting, my intention is that the viewer will see what inspired me about the composition and feel the atmophere in the moment, the beauty in the light.

I enjoy the challenges and surprises of using watercolor to develop the shapes, values, and contrasts that define landscapes, objects and people, letting the pigments and water flow and blend to create images and light. The paper itself is part of the creation as the white and lightest areas of the image. It is a process that requires both careful planning and spontaneity. In every piece I am trying to use this medium to find a particular light that can evoke an emotional response to the moment captured.
Artist Bio:
Ron began painting in watercolor after his retirement. Inspired by the unique light of Outer Cape Cod and South Florida, he seeks to capture special moments of ever-changing light and colors. His work includes landscapes, architectural scenes and human figures. A resident of Provincetown and Fort Lauderdale, he has studied at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Cape School of Art, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and the Bonnet House Museum in Fort Lauderdale. His work has been awarded by the Gold Coast Watercolor Society.
PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY (CAMERA OBSCURA) UNRAVELLED WORKSHOP WITH MARIAN ROTH
(CAMERA OBSCURA) UNRAVELLED:
Pinhole Photography
Led by Artist Marian Roth
Date: Thursday, June 18
Time: 1 PM – 4 PM
Location: The Commons
Free and open to the public
Register:
Step into the world of pinhole photography with acclaimed Provincetown artist Marian Roth. In this workshop, participants will explore the magic of image-making using one of photography’s oldest and simplest techniques: a tiny hole instead of a lens.
Marian Roth will give a talk on the mechanics and aesthetics of pinhole photography. You will learn how, in general, to construct a pinhole camera out of almost anything. Then we will turn a space in The Commons into a pinhole camera. Participants can use a phone or SLR to make images within the space.
*if you have a camera you would like to convert into a pinhole camera, please contact Marian Roth beforehand.
What is Pinhole Photography?
Pinhole photography is a lensless photographic technique that captures images using a tiny hole rather than a traditional camera lens. Light passes through the pinhole and projects an inverted image onto photosensitive paper or film, producing atmospheric and often beautifully unexpected results.

Have you been wanting to shift your writing process and community? To find connection as you work on your own, personal projects? Come to The Commons and spend a couple of hours in collaborative creation. We will have a bowl of prompts in case anyone needs one, and we will be together, writing. We will say hello, set our intentions, set a timer for 30 min for writing, then talk and stretch for 5 minutes or so. And repeat. The last 15 minutes, we can share either new work or ideas. Working in the presence and community of others can radically shift what we do, even if we don't share "output" or "product." Let's just be writers together in a room for a couple of hours.

Session 1: What Is a Brand, Really?
Tuesday, June 23 | 4:00–5:30 PM
A grounding session that breaks down what a brand actually is: the gut feeling people have about you when you’re not in the room.
We’ll explore the core elements every brand has, whether they’ve named them or not: who you are, who you’re for, what you stand for, how you sound, and how you look. Along the way, we’ll look at familiar brands and pull them apart to see how each piece is doing its job.
By the end of the session, you’ll have a clear mental model for what a brand is, what it isn’t, and where yours may already be stronger than you thought.
Session 2: Creating Your Brand
Tuesday, June 30 | 4:00–5:30 PM
This is the hands-on session.
Using the framework from Session 1, you’ll apply the ideas directly to your own work through short, guided exercises. You’ll draft a one-sentence brand statement, identify your ideal customer, and define three brand “anchors” — the words, feelings, or visuals that can guide future decisions.
We’ll also do a quick brand audit to find where your current touchpoints may be sending inconsistent signals.
Bring a notebook and the project, product, or practice you most want to clarify. You’ll leave with a one-page brand toolkit you can keep working through after the session.
Attend both workshops for the full experience: first, understand what makes a brand work; then apply the framework to your own creative practice or business.

MAKING LIGHT
Making Light: A Conversation with Artists on Sustaining Creativity, Courage, and Connection in Difficult Times
Tuesday, June 23 | 6 - 7:30 PM
Location: THE COMMONS
46 Bradford Street
Provincetown
Presented by Jeannette de Beauvoir
Panelists: to be announced
I don’t have to tell you how frightening this time is. I’ve had to really force myself every day to move out of that fear and back into a space in which I can create. You may be experiencing something similar.
I felt that we as creatives needed to have some conversations about it. To support each other. To find ways to carry on. And so I created a program called Making Light—because in dark times, artists make light.
We meet monthly at the Provincetown Commons (46 Bradford St., Provincetown, MA) and have a conversation together—visual artists, musicians, writers, poets, performers—to support our own practices as well as those of everyone in our community. Everyone is welcome to participate.
Dates are as follows; the time is 6:00pm:
As I fill in topics and panelists, I’ll include that information here. I’m also updating this page regularly with resources; if there’s something you’d like to share, feel free to send it to me at jeannettedebeauvoir@gmail.com.

I am a figurative expressionist painter. My use of expressive black-and-white paintings explore emotion, connection, and the shared human experience. Inspired by Provincetown’s vibrant community, my recent portraits capture the humor, tenderness, and vulnerability of everyday life, inviting viewers to recognize themselves within her subject. My art is inspired by people—their emotions, their stories, and their shared humanity. Much of my recent work explores black-and-white portraits of men set against the Provincetown backdrop. By stripping away color, I distill each subject to their emotional essence, inviting viewers to connect directly with their inner world.
Artist Bio
I am a figurative expressionist painter living and working in Provincetown, Massachusetts. My earliest artistic memories are rooted here, where my grandmother—an artist herself—brought me to her Provincetown and Wellfleet gallery exhibitions. Those early experiences instilled in me a lifelong sense of belonging to this creative community. I earned my B.A. in Illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology, where I developed a foundation in visual storytelling that continues to inform my work today.

These are landscapes built from memory and inheritance, a terrain that belongs to a new world. They are made with two techniques: the punch needle creates ground, texture and height, while the couching lays down and stitches lines, sometimes layering colors into shifting contours that never settle on a single thing. One technique builds the body; the other draws lines through it. Together they form terrain — ridgelines, troughs, and the high white of something cresting against the dark. My father crossed from China to Taiwan at eighteen, during the Great Exodus in 1949. I learned the details of his passage after he passed away, and I began these works in that same period. What I understand now is that I was building us a new land: everyone who had to leave a place that wouldn't keep them and went searching for ground that would. You raise it stitch by stitch, making somewhere to stand.

Sisu :The collective Finnish concept of personal endurance, fortitude, grit ; a perseverance to continue onward when challenges seem insurmountable.
Grandchildren of Finnish immigrants whose families initially settled in Western MA, Karen Ojala and Nancy Rahnasto Osborne met decades later in the art community of the Outer Cape. They share a Nordic sensibility in their art and admiration in each others work .
They both had mirrored aspirations to become the best they could be having late starts on their artistic paths which came to fruition for them both after years of work and child rearing. With that in common this exhibit cultivates the vision they held to exhibit together . The concept of Sisu is buried deep in the core of both of these artists.
“The origin of art, a work song of the interior” Basho
Nancy Rahnasto Osborne (1954-2026). Art was woven into Nancy’s life from the very beginning — a childhood passion she carried with her through her successful career at the Walt Disney Company and never let go. When she retired she returned to that creative core, dedicating herself to art and studying with Joyce Johnson and Romolo Del Deo, among others. Luminous oils and bold sculptures marked her showings at The Works Gallery in Wellfleet, Provincetown Commons, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, where she served as co-president of the board. Her bronze sculpture “Lookout” will be installed on MacMillan Pier in 2026 under the auspices of the Provincetown Public Art Foundation.
Artist Statement:
(Karen's) I am enthralled by portrait expressionism and work primarily from life in my studio space where I carefully choose the model, the setting, and the composition to create an intentional yet natural environment. With every setting there is something to discover in the process and that's what drives the flow of my art. In the encapsulated fleeting time of a model’s sitting, I paint my ‘alla prima’ interpretation, a first expression of their being.

“Painting became my full-time focus in 2021 after a decades-long career in media and writing. As a painter, I hope to capture the visual magic of the places that live in my memory and imagination. These include subjects from in and around Provincetown, nature, astronomical events, and moments I’ve experienced with people I love. I’m also interested in the art historical context of Provincetown and American art in general. Stylistically, I’m drawn to post-impressionists, Romanticism, surrealism, and the contemporary notion of realism ‘disrupted’ by memory and alteration.”
ARTIST BIO
A full-time Provincetown resident since 2016, Towle graduated from Vassar College. He received a Stegner Fellowship in creative writing at Stanford and two writing fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, in poetry (1991-92) and fiction (1995-96). Towle also created the widely-read LGBTQ news and culture website Towleroad in 2003 and headed it editorially until 2021. Prior to founding Towleroad, Towle was the editor-in-chief of Genre magazine and an editor-at-large for Out Traveler. Artist Statement:
"The Colors of Provincetown" is an exploration of the shifting atmosphere in the Outer Cape. By sampling specific hues from personal photography captured throughout the year, Tommy translates the ephemeral light of the landscape and coast into a permanent, tactile record. His work seeks to isolate the essence of a season—the specific slate-blue of the harbor or the vibrant ochre of a late Autumn marsh—and reassemble it into a rhythmic, abstract narrative. Working on a foundation of plywood and canvas, he applies oil paints in dense, gestural layers. He also work with layering resin on plywood. This layering process allows the colors to interact and vibrate, mimicking the kinetic energy & lighting of the ever-changing landscape.
Artist Bio:
Tommy Wiles is an abstract oil painter whose work investigates the intersection of colors, environmental data and sensory experience. Originally from Texas, Wiles spent much of his professional career in corporate life before transitioning to the creative world. This background informs his meticulous approach to "sampling" the world—translating the vast, chaotic beauty of nature into structured, rhythmic abstract compositions. His style ranges from dense, fragmented gesturalism to analytical geometric grids, all unified by a commitment to capturing the essence of a location.

I’m a Provincetown-based painter working primarily in acrylic, with some oil and mixed media. Living on the Outer Cape has deeply shaped my work—the light, the architecture, and the quiet rhythm of coastal life continually influence what I choose to paint. I’m drawn to everyday subjects like local streets, buildings, and still lifes, focusing on color and atmosphere to capture not just how things look, but how they feel. My Ducky series brings in a more playful side, using humor and character while still exploring composition and color. Across all of my work, I’m interested in creating something familiar but personal—paintings that reflect where I live and invite others to connect with those moments in their own way.
Artist Bio
Wayne Briggs is a Provincetown-based contemporary realist painter working in acrylic, oil, and mixed media. After more than two decades in the creative industry, he fully committed to painting in 2023. His work reflects a continued exploration of place, atmosphere, and personal narrative, honoring the timeless qualities of representational art while embracing a contemporary, expressive edge.

After graduating from Bowdoin College with a degree in Visual Art and Art History, my artistic practice went largely dormant for decades until moving to Provincetown in 2017. Since then I have experimented with various media and taken classes at PAAM, FAWC and Castle Hill.

I grew up in central Connecticut. I spent my professional career living near Boston, working for eleven years at Massachusetts General Hospital. I then worked privately as a dentist and orthodontist and taught part-time for twenty five years at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. For the past thirty-five years I have studied and evolved in the field of Fine Arts and have been supported by my family, friends and patrons. I was drawing and painting by age 9. I watched whatever painting shows that were televised without realizing this was a secular interest. While I was encouraged to pursue another profession that had an artistic element to it, I spent my free time creating my own work. On my down time I studied at the Montserrat College of Visual Art, the Decordova Museum School, The Cape Cod School of Art, The Provincetown Fine Arts Workshop, and the Museum School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. My studios are in Truro MA and in Sonoma, CA.
I was originally inspired by work in sculpture and pastel. I found a preference in oil, stayed and studied. It has been a lifelong visual and technique evolution. I do plein-aire for small works and studio painting from sketches, drawings and designs from my imagination which I connect to scenes.
My work is influenced by the subleties of color and light which have a visual effect and mark my memory and emotions. It represents a serene moment in which one is absorbed into the scene. This opens internal senses. My work is done through the joy of creating a scene that is captivating.
I am inspired by the painting of William Turner, Edward Hopper, Vincent Van Gogh, Claud Monet, Frederick Remington and many more. The passion I feel in my work is at times inspired by music. My goal is in the visual and psychological experience of creating.
I enjoy sharing that experience with others as shared connection to our unusual world.

As a fine art landscape photographer, Lance Colby Hatch’s work centers on Provincetown and the Cape Cod National Seashore. Hatch approaches photography as both documentation and emotional interpretation, seeking to preserve the fleeting relationship between light, weather, and place. Returning repeatedly to the same locations across seasons and years, Hatch builds long-form visual narratives rather than isolated images. With the viewer in mind, he focuses his lens on moments that evoke a sense of wonder, grace, and the ephemeral. His work emphasizes scale, atmosphere, and subtle tonal transitions, often capturing moments of quiet stillness that invite prolonged viewing.

My work is inspired by the shifting light on the cape. Where the land meets the sea. Color is my muse and my hope is the viewer can gain some joy from my work.
Linda Turoczi fell in love with the cape as a small child. She has painted and studied with many fine teachers. Her childhood memories of summers in Yarmouthport are among her favorite. As a colorist and plein air painter, the teachers from Castle Hill, Cape School and PAAM included Rob Longley, Charles Sovek and Joan Hopkins. At home, she studied with Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts teachers; Jon Redmond, Martin Campos and Giovanni Cassedi. She has won awards in juried shows: Audubon Show, Audubon, Pa., Schuylkill River Art Show, Montgomery County College, Jenkins Arboretum Show, Delaware Valley Art League . She has been represented by galleries on the Cape as well as the Philadelphia area. She has participated in group shows with Addison Art Gallery; Hopper Show, After Thoreau, Mary Heaton Vorse House. This is her second show at The Commons. Linda lives in the Philadelphia area and is grateful to be able to return to Truro every year. She spends her winters painting the landscapes of Pennsylvania and in summer, the beauty of the cape. She has two lovely granddaughters that love color and the outdoors.

Jean Fogg-Brock works in the style of Abstract Expression, starting with the application of various collage materials, tearing at magazines , old books, maps, cardboard and found refuse. The surfaces of her work tend to be tactile, gritty and textural, exploring the use of latext and oil paint simultaneously, frequently adding plaster to the mix. A recurring exploration for Jean is the action and outcome that intuitively happens between the surfaces she creates. The underlaying surface of mark-making and gestural brush strokes often run wild, colorful and free, while the muted top layer struggles to calm, conceal and veil over the chaotic undercurrent. This approach allows for only some of the hidden shinier treasures to escape, endure, and resist suppression. As if to quieten the brain chatter from concerns of today’s fast-pace world and provide the viewer and herself a peaceful place to land.
Artist Bio
Jean Fogg-Brock has lived and worked in the west end of Provincetown with her husband Chip Brock for 30 years where they share a studio. Chip built the studio with 4 floors to provide for each of their multi-disciplinary interests such as collage and painting, printmaking, encaustic, mosaics and wood sculpture. Jean watched her Mother’s lovely portrait-making and still-life painting, as well as worked for her Father’s Silk-Screen Printing business in Boston for most of her youth, inspiring a life-long affinity for the print-making process and combining different techniques into her painting. Jean has been jury-selected for over a dozen exhibitions affiliated with PAAM, Cape Cod Museum of Art, The Printmakers of Cape Cod, and The Larken Gallery. She was a student at The Art Institute of Boston mentored by Barbara Apel, Jason Berger and Peter Hoss. She has enjoyed classes at FAWC and Castle Hill and was a featured artist in Boston Voyager Magazine, Local Stories. Jean is a member of The Sail Loft Artist Collective.

The moon paints with sand at the edges of the sea. She has different colors available: the blues and greens of the water itself, and within the sand: iron, algae, quartz, and more. She moves it into patterns using gravity and fluid dynamics through the water. Clearly an abstract expressionist, she is not inspired by but perhaps an inspiration for Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, Elaine de Kooning, and other artists of the movement, who inspired me. It was a joy to find I could have relationship to them using photography. Many of the painters who inspired me throughout my life spent time in New York and Provincetown, as I have, and I offer these works an homage. My photographs can be disorienting, but pointing the lens straight down removes the human perspective and alters context. With this disorientation, I hope to prompt in viewers a memory or emotion, instead of the intellect. These abstractions defy scale, evoking not only paintings but also x-rays, or microscopic images showing bodies in all our intimate interior beauty, plants, or even celestial objects. The laws of fluid dynamics are truly universal. I cannot imagine I would ever stop doing this. I go as often as possible because this work causes real wonder in me, like a child, which brings me joy. Every tide, season, and weather condition is different. It is a process of constant discovery and creativity as I find the best point of view to document the moon's beautiful work.

Whispers of the Wharf At the edge of land and sea, Provincetown exists in a constant state of becoming—shaped by shifting tides, changing light, and the quiet rhythm of daily life. Whispers of the Wharf is a photographic exploration of the transient beauty found in these in-between spaces. Through an emphasis on light and shadow, this body of work focuses on moments that are easily overlooked: a gesture between strangers, the brief glow of sunlight on weathered wood, reflections created & erased by the tides. The wharf serves as both subject and metaphor—a place of arrival and departure, of work and wandering, of history layered with contemporary life. The photographs reflect Provincetown as it is today: alive with people that are drawn to the beauty and the magic that define its spirit and allure. This series invites viewers to slow down, see what I see and observe what might otherwise go unnoticed... the fleeting moments that linger just long enough to be captured before they’re gone.
Artist Bio

I am a self-taught artist originally from the UK, now living in North Truro on Cape Cod. While I work in a variety of media - collage, assemblage, altered books - my primary source material is almost always used maps and atlases. I create three-dimensional art from maps, which themselves are a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional world. When I select maps to use in my work I’m driven almost entirely by the aesthetics of the colors and shapes within them. I ‘excavate’ the maps - hand cutting away specific areas, which then heightens the focus on others. With spaces between the roads of a map removed, the viewer is able to peer deep into the mass of tangled layers of streets, perhaps a symbol of the messiness of interconnected lives. There is both a sense of loss, of the absence of what has been removed, and a sense of resilience and endurance, as the roads remain intact within the fragile structure of the now lace-like pages. Maps are of particular interest to me - they are beautiful to look at, they represent areas lived in and places still to visit, and I have incredibly fond memories of learning to map read when I was very young. Now, as an adult, and living on a different continent from where I grew up, maps make the world seem smaller and give me a physical and emotional connection to another time and place. One of my favorite things about using maps to create art is that they retain the inherent history of the person who owned them before me - a history I am rarely privy to yet I feel becomes part of the work I create. I often imagine maps and atlases rolling off the printing press - household names like Hammond, AAA, Rand McNally, (or Ordnance Survey from the UK, where I grew up). And somehow one of the tens of thousands of copies of that particular edition, maybe decades (once or twice even a century) after it was printed, finds its way to me. The paper is worn at the folds, yellowed at the edges, cities are circled, routes are highlighted. Coffee spills, phone numbers, and directional notes all speak to its earlier life as a functional object in someone else’s hands. Through these maps I experience histories small and large as I vicariously travel other peoples’ vacations, and witness the downfall of empires as borders move and country names change. I like to say that a beautiful map makes my heart race and my hand reach for my X-acto knife. And through the cutting and tearing, the layering and pasting, the rolling and folding of that one atlas or single map, I too become part of its history.

Art is not psychology. Art is not illustration. Art is consequence.
I love to push paint around. I’m not really interested in any kind of morality in painting or teaching anybody anything. If someone sees any commentary in my work it is their interpretation. What I do is for myself, an arrangement of dark and light, composing lyrically with the pigments, the textures and the resulting forms. My paintings are about my state of mind. Totally lucid but non-rational. I am not comfortable with the term “abstract” in describing my work because it implies the manipulation of an existing structure or object. I rather like to consider my paintings contemporary artifacts of sorts. Souvenirs of an inward journey, having a unique vocabulary, with no conclusions, just conversations. My purpose, simply stated, is that I have none other than the process itself, standing alone as a means of contemplation and not as a mirror.
However, for the sake of the viewer and to quote Aldous Huxley “Every significant artist is a metaphysician, a propounder of beauty-truths and form theories.” But if there are beauty truths to be formed then the best that anyone can do is to hold space for that which is hard to define, utilizing open ended, responsive forms in the way that a parent holds the space for a child to play and to experience the world. This body of work illustrates that the real subject running through it is playfulness founded in the magic and mystery of the poetic experience.

Priscilla enjoys the lushness and messiness of oil paint and the texture of rough surfaces showing through the stroke. Without an education in drawing, Priscilla is still surprised she can convey a subject that is recognizable without being photographic. She is excited by vibrant color, frustrated by the effort required to develop a piece, but calmed by the Zen focus required. She works largely from photographs of local subjects and her travels. She feels she is just scratching the surface of painting.
Artist Bio
Priscilla Jackett has lived year-round in Provincetown for over 56 years. Although taking many art history courses as a college undergraduate and enjoying the lively gallery scene in Provincetown, she only began painting in her late 40’s wanting to take advantage of the plethora of well-known painters living here. Painting very intermittently while working her day job, she began her studies with Gail Browne and Carole Westcott and participated occasionally in PAAM and Castle Hill workshops with Sal DelDeo, TJ Walton, Mark Adams, and Mary Giammarino, among others. Plato felt that beautiful objects incorporate proportion, harmony and unity among their parts. Walter's artwork strives to acknowledge Plato and envision simple, elegant and sensual works that evoke the natural places and figures their inspiration came from. When an appreciator of his art embraces the ‘sense of place’ in his work his mission is fulfilled. In his current series of oil / CWM paintings, his focus is to evoke the sensuality of men in a natural environment saturated in light and water - this new series 'Boy Beach Boys' are exercises using transparent layers of paint to convey this.
Artist Bio:
Making objects and paintings has been Walter’s life work from childhood through retirement. After graduating from MassArt his work for 10 years thereafter was as a scientific illustrator at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoōlogy. Concurrently, he was employed as a horticulturist on the 16-acre estate of Ellen Paine, the daughter of renowned landscape architect Charles Eliot. This work fostered his further interest in the environment and led to obtaining a Master of Landscape Architecture degree. Professional work for a series of major landscape architecture firms utilized Walter’s talents in drawing to create visible representations for clients. His own painting in oil was pursued throughout his professional work, but it proliferated after retirement. Walter’s development of acrylic underpainting followed by transparent layers of oil / cold wax medium was used to develop the luminous light-filled canvases he is known for.

My work is inspired by the landscapes of Provincetown, Wellfleet, and Truro—places that feel both timeless and alive. The dunes rise and shift, the houses stand a little crooked with history, and the people bring a warmth that connects it all. I’m drawn to these imperfections. Through my paintings, I try to capture not just the scene, but the feeling of being there.
Artist Bio
Dianne is a messy, impatient painter who loves color and crooked lines. Dianne is drawn to imperfect and timeless objects. Old boats, wharves, and pilings are great subject matters. Abstract flowers in wonky vases and bathing suit clad figures are other personal favorites.

Wendy Allen’s work explores the intersection of form, function, and daily ritual. Working in stoneware and porcelain, she creates pieces intended for use—objects that become part of everyday life, from shared meals to quiet moments at home. Influenced by her Danish roots, Allen is drawn to simplicity, balance, and the beauty of well-made, functional design. She builds surfaces through texture and layered glazes, creating depth and variation so that each piece feels both tactile and visually rich. As she works, Allen considers the eventual home of each piece: a table set for gathering, a softly lit evening with one of her luminaries, or a vase holding fresh flowers. Her practice is rooted in the belief that handmade objects gain meaning through use, and she is especially interested in the life her work takes on beyond the studio—living in other people’s homes and becoming part of their stories.
Artist Bio
Wendy Allen is a Truro-based potter who has been honing her practice for over a decade, with studio experience in New York, New Jersey, and Oxford, England. Working primarily in stoneware and porcelain, she creates pieces that explore a range of forms, brought to life through layered glazes and richly developed surface textures. Influenced by her Danish roots, Allen’s work reflects a deep appreciation for simplicity, balance, and functionality. Each piece is designed with intention—meant to be held, used, and integrated into daily rituals.

My work explores the always changing sea and shifting sands which surround the Outer Cape. From gentle waters brushing the shoreline, to crashing waves in all their fury. When I turn away from the beaches I’m drawn to the marshes at lands’ end and the three lighthouses dotting the shore. In all my works I strive to capture a moment in time and invite the viewers to pause, reflect, and find their own narratives within the work.
Artist Bio
Den Streeff attended F.I.T in New York City as a graphic artist student and worked in the industry for several years in Manhattan and Boston. He moved to Ptown in the early nineties and began to explore the finer arts along with creative writing. Over the years he attended courses in all kinds of mediums searching for his voice. More recently he studied working in charcoal/conte/graphite with Kathy Smith. He studied white line printing under Kathy as well, which she is renowned for. He has taken painting classes with Steve Kennedy working in acrylics. In 2023 he fell in love with soft pastels after having taking Eileen Casey’s class at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham. Since then, he has further his studies in pastels taking classes at The Cultural Center of Cape Cod studying under different teachers. This past year he won a Barbara Stone Scholarship to study under a master pastelist. He is a member of the Pastel Society of Cape Cod and is a member of PAAM.

My recent acrylics on panels and paper represent a synthesis of the soul: a personal exploration of life on the Outer Cape. They are a visual fusion of self and environment; the body/mind connection; the comfort and beauty of home; the individuality and immortality of painted images. I paint whatever moves me at any given time, with form and feeling. Painting is color in all its myriad methods and combinations: the light and character of Provincetown at the end of a fulfilling day, depending on the mood and weather; the excitement and relaxation of always looking, both inside and outside, keeps up the momentum. I hope you will enjoy the show. Rowena Perkins – New Paintings The Commons - Provincetown October 14 – 25, 2026

"The Art of Becoming" is a curated group exhibition that explores the profound and varied expressions of inner strength and resilience following trauma and recovery. Bringing together a diverse group of artists working in painting, sculpture and mixed media the show features individuals who have each navigated personal or collective trauma and channeled their experiences into creative expression. Thought trauma leaves it's mark, it does not define us; this exhibition showcases art created during, as a product of, and in the aftermath of pain, serving as a testament to the powerful, often quiet, act of survival and transformation.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
I moved to Provincetown in 1973. This sacred area has been my home base ever since. After graduate school at Sarah Lawrence and Brown University, I taught at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, 1983-87 and in the first Women’s Studies Department in the nation at San Diego State University, 1987-2020.
Since childhood I’ve roamed woods, beaches, mountains, deserts and urban streets scavenging nature’s gifts: antlers, feathers, wood, bones, glass shards, broken castoffs from stained glass studios, rusted metal, ocean wash-ups and creatures whose lives left behind gorgeous remnants. In my years in San Diego, my family and I drove cross-country many times, each trip bringing new treasures from Indian country, the Badlands, New Mexico, the original Route 66, and more. The Anza Borrego desert, east of San Diego was a magical place for finds. Years in Provincetown allowed trips to the woods of northern New England. Dear friends in Alaska, Minnesota and Maine provided me shed antlers galore.
These natural beauties are supplemented by meticulously curated materials I’ve collected in metal junk yards, construction sites, and roadside flea markets, swap meets and shops specializing in ubiquitous bins of items from eras long ago.
My assemblages use all these materials to create mood and honor memories. Animals’ beauty is central to my designs, as are nature’s connections to the human world. My work is a tribute to the untamed magic that surrounds us, and how natural and human “remains” can transport us and create stories.
In a time of political turmoil, distrust and deception, “Untamed” seeks to offer balance by celebrating beauty and joy.

SAIL LOFT ARTISTS COLLECTIVE
The Collective is a reimagining of the historic Provincetown women's art club called The Sail Loft, founded in 1916. At that time, the original Sail Loft was created specifically as a social and intellectual hub for women artists. The original club met in a space where sailmakers stitched canvas to catch the wind. In that same loft, women gathered to share their art and ideas - to support one another and build momentum.
In November 2022, the Collective was formed as an un-named group. Local painter Valerie Isaacs gathered 50 women and non-binary artists together for a festive dinner at The Provincetown Commons to form a group for professional working artists. The Collective honors the Sail Loft Club’s legacy of creating a dedicated space for women which has easily evolved into a welcoming space for non-binary artists as well. The group recognizes and celebrates the under-represented contributions of women and non-binary artistic voices, an essential thread in the Outer Cape's artistic tapestry.
Meeting Schedule
The Collective meets monthly in the off-season for informal potluck gatherings, occasionally featuring themed discussions or presentations where members can share their current projects or discuss work processes with their peers.
We encourage all women and non-binary artists residing on the Outer Cape to drop in on their monthly potluck gatherings.
The remaining meetings for 2026 will be held at The Provincetown Commons, 46 Bradford Street, Provincetown, MA.
Community members are encouraged to bring a dish or a snack to share!

Making Light: A Conversation with Artists on Sustaining Creativity, Courage, and Connection in Difficult Times

Location: THE COMMONS

Dates are as follows; the time is 7:00pm:
June 23
As I fill in topics and panelists, I’ll include that information here. I’m also updating this page regularly with resources; if there’s something you’d like to share, feel free to send it to me at jeannettedebeauvoir@gmail.com.

My studio practice is expansive, embracing installation, assemblage, welding, casting, neon, photography, fiber, and performance. I create artifacts, feral species, vortexes of dialectics, and experiences that investigate the forces behind metamorphosis, voice, and resistance. I work at the intersection of queer bodies and ecology, Constitutional theory, mutagenetics, and public health to illuminate the diversity of human needs and capabilities.
I draw from a patchwork of life experiences: son of a mathematician and a musician; stage performer; attorney and academic; advocate for queer health and dignity; addiction survivor; and interdisciplinary visual artist. My experience navigating growth zones allows me to surf the vulnerability of learning new materials and techniques, and helps me maintain inward, outward, and upward curiosity as I work.
My artistic practice is the denouement and ongoing synthesis of my experiences: I createlike I have nothing to lose. Although research plays a major role in my process, I thrive at the nexus of studied investigation and improvisation. I am a ferociously curious solution seeker who transforms objects, environments, and myself by finding emergent functionalities, properties, and syllogistic potential. My materials work is restless and recursive: I gather, research, play, suture, remove, and press forward. After canvasing and scavenging, I sit with materials in the way one eats a gourmet cupcake—by slowly peeling the lining, testing precious bits, savoring one half, then skulking down at night to devour the rest, like some Lazarus species. I tend to resist the sleekness and severity of minimalism and focus on creating hybrid forms and providing a container for energy bursts and optical respites.
My work is frequently grounded in normative theories of justice, the upstream determinants of capability, and how bodies—especially queer bodies— navigate systems of power.

I work with grassello al fresco, layering and carving until something catches and opens into its own logic—toward the genius loci of boats, barns, ruins, mountains. I begin with a loose idea, but the real work is following what shows up through gesture, accident, and a kind of overactive seeing. Forms surface, half-found, half-made, and I follow them—carving or catching an edge in gold—until they hold.
Artist Bio:

With roots in both rural Vermont and New York City’s decorative arts world, her practice bridges architectural finish and painting. Exploring images that hold my attention, and reaching a state of playfulness where thought is abandoned and paint flows opens the door to creation for me. Whether a specific image appears or not, the piece comes through on its own terms. Viewers will see and feel from the individual perspectives but hopefully, intrigue, questions and return investigation are commonalities to the experience. Materials are unlimited. Art is everywhere and can be made with anything.
Artist Bio:
Wyld began expressing art through design and building of homes. When the desire to paint emerged, and with no formal training in painting, it was instinctual to draw on skills learned in construction and using the familiar tools and materials of that field became foundational to the creation of the artworks. Wyld began the painting journey in her Hudson, NY, basement, and more recently in her Provincetown studio.

In the ancient practice of kulning (cattle calling), Scandinavian herdswomen communicated across miles, with their herds and with each other, using only the power of their voices. This vocal technique projected the women's song-like calls up to three miles away - through woods, across lakes and mountains - to call their herds in from grazing, or to alert other herdswomen of a lost animal or a predator nearby. Reaching up to 125 decibels, as loud as a thunderclap, it’s said these women could even ward off wolves and bears using just the power of their voices. Kulning calls were as individual as each woman, and the technique was passed down through family lines, from mothers, aunts, and grandmothers. The calls have a musical quality, and the singers use the landscape itself to control the direction and strength of their calls.
The inspiration for this body of work comes from a collection of recordings of women performing traditional kulning in the 1960’s. As I listen, I imagine my own ancestors in Sweden as farmers, and I wonder what wisdom they would share with us about the power of women’s voices. The recordings conjure for me the help that we need during dangerous times: helpers on a parallel plane. Magical foxes, fanciful birds, plants, snakes and ancestors, and figures I call “Evelyns” - the guiding entities that both warn us of danger and help us avoid it if we tune into their presence. This work is my balm for anxiety, for a planet in peril and humans in crisis. I have created my own sort of mythology, one in which we reconnect to nature, and nurture hope and joy that percolate up through worry and despair.

Join us in welcoming Eve and Trekker Sibley, co-creators of the ecological card game STEWARD, for a dynamic 4-part workshop series exploring the ecosystems of the Outer Cape.
Participants will begin by playing the original version of STEWARD, inspired by the South Carolina Low Country, then collaborate to imagine and create a Provincetown-based version of the game. Together, we’ll explore the unique intertidal ecosystems of Provincetown, considering their beauty, complexity, and vulnerability.
Each session will focus on a different local ecosystem, inviting participants to learn about its characteristics, identify environmental threats, and explore ways to become better stewards of our coastal environment. Whether you attend all four sessions or drop in for one, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how everyday actions can help protect our shores.
The series will culminate in a guided walk on the flats with Provincetown Shellfish Constable Steve Wisbauer, offering a firsthand look at the ecosystems explored throughout the workshop.

A Reading of Isaac's Eye by Lucas Hnath
Join us at The Commons for an evening reading of Lucas Hnath’s Isaac's Eye, a compelling theatrical work that imagines the young Isaac Newton as brilliant, obsessive, and fiercely hungry for recognition.
Directed by Joe MacDougall, this reading brings together a cast of local performers for an intimate presentation of a play that blends historical fact and fiction. Set against Newton’s rivalry with Robert Hooke, the story explores ego, invention, and the punishing extremes of scientific ambition.
The play also dramatizes Newton’s painful experiments on his own eyes as he searches to understand light, turning a familiar historical figure into a vivid, unsettling, and darkly funny stage character.

MAKING LIGHT
Making Light: A Conversation with Artists on Sustaining Creativity, Courage, and Connection in Difficult Times
Tuesday, April 21 | 6 - 7:30 PM
Location: THE COMMONS
46 Bradford Street
Provincetown
Presented by Jeannette de Beauvoir
It’s free and everyone’s welcome. Let’s resist the dark!
Dates are as follows; the time is 7:00pm:
May 19
June 23
As I fill in topics and panelists, I’ll include that information here. I’m also updating this page regularly with resources; if there’s something you’d like to share, feel free to send it to me at jeannettedebeauvoir@gmail.com.
