About the Play
Originally developed at Perseverance Theatre and first staged at Alley Theatre before its Off-Broadway premiere in 1992, The Baltimore Waltz is one of Paula Vogel’s most inventive and heartfelt works.
Presented as a wildly comic European adventure, the play follows sister and brother Anna and Carl on an imagined odyssey through Paris, Amsterdam, and beyond. In this fast-moving farce, the pair pursue pleasure, absurd romance, and a cure for the fictional “Acquired Toilet Disease” (ATD), supposedly contracted in a school bathroom. Along the way, they encounter a mysterious “Third Man,” a nod to the classic film The Third Man.
Beneath its outrageous humor and theatrical playfulness lies a deeply moving truth. The journey is ultimately revealed to be a fantasy unfolding in a hospital room in Baltimore, Maryland, where Anna imagines the trip she never got to take with her terminally ill brother. Inspired by Vogel’s own experiences, The Baltimore Waltz is a poignant meditation on love, loss, grief, and the power of imagination.
Join us for this special free reading as part of the B Plot Reading Series—an evening of bold storytelling, sharp humor, and heartfelt reflection. All are welcome.
