Artist Statement:
When I was in college, three significant events influenced my direction as an artist: 1) The escalation of the war in Vietnam; 2) My first painting class taught by a young, energetic teacher whose abstract work was radiant with color; (3) Being mentored by an abstract expressionist painter (artist-in-residence) who, by turning out one print after another, forced me to question wherein lay creativity.
Nonetheless, the creative process gave me a freedom I had never experienced before. I enjoyed painting but wanted my art to connect with the activist world of which I was a part (civil rights work, teaching in a “ghetto” church in the South Bronx, humanitarian work in the Central African Republic, pro- Sandinista protests on the border with El Salvador, demonstrations against the Vietnam War, etc.).
Upon graduating from Dartmouth, I, therefore, declined acceptance into Yale’s MFA program and instead accepted a fellowship to the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, eventually becoming an Episcopal priest. Later, I received an MFA from Pratt Institute (NYC) in sculpture and photography. My primary creative commitment has been to large scale, site-specific installations and conceptual work, all focused on political, religious and cultural issues. The smaller sculptures I’m showing at The Commons reflect these same concerns.
Artist Bio:
Thomas Faulkner is an artist with studios on Cape Cod and in Wyarno, Wyoming. Until a recent move to Massachusetts, he maintained studios in New York City for many years. Tom has created large site-specific sculpture (e.g. Public Art Fund, People Who Live… Bryant Park, NYC) and smaller three - dimensional sculpture – focused on political, religious and cultural issues. He uses photography both as a fine art and, with text, in conceptual work.
He has an MFA from Pratt Institute, a BA from Dartmouth College, and a MDiv from the Episcopal Theological School. He did independent studies at the San Francisco Art Institute and the New York Art Students League. His work has been reviewed in Art Forum, Art In America, New Art Examiner, Salt Lake Tribune, The New York Times, Provincetown Independent and others. His Stations of The Cross was featured on KCRW’s (LA) Art Talk.
He and his wife Brenda permanently relocated from New York City to Eastham in 2023 after renovating a family home. Their son Christopher lives in Victor, New York. They have two dogs, Alma and Bugsy.
