MAKE YOUR OWN SCREEN PRINT T-SHIRT WERKshop
LONDON CALLING Fashion Show Edition
Led by Artist Charlie Welch
Join us for a hands-on, two-day workshop where you'll learn the art of handmade silk-screen printing and create original wearable artwork inspired by this year's Fashion Show theme: LONDON CALLING. You'll learn a simple, reusable silk-screen process that can be replicated at home, including how to create your own screens, transfer imagery, mix inks, and print on fabric.

Day One: Design & Screen Creation
Participants will:
Learn the basics of handmade silk-screen printing
Explore the LONDON CALLING theme through London's punk, mod, glam, street style, music, and underground culture
Develop original artwork and graphic designs for printing
Learn principles of typography, symbolism, and visual storytelling
Prepare artwork for screen printing using stencil techniques
Understand positive and negative space in design
Create and prepare their own reusable silk screen
Gain skills and techniques they can use for future DIY printing projects
By the end of Day One, participants will have a completed screen ready for printing in Session Two.
Day Two: Printing, Production & Fashion Show Pieces
Participants will:
Review screen printing techniques and studio setup
Learn ink preparation, color selection, and screen registration
Print two finished shirts:
One to take home
One to be sold in the LONDON CALLING Fashion Show to benefit The Commons
Practice proper squeegee technique and fabric printing methods
Explore layering, special effects, and achieving consistent print quality
Learn finishing techniques, heat setting, and care instructions for washable garments
Troubleshoot common printing challenges and refine final prints
Prepare completed shirts for exhibition and sale in the Fashion Show
Participate in a group review of finished work
Enjoy a Q&A with artist Charlie Welch and receive resources for continuing screen printing at home
By the end of Day Two, participants will leave with a finished hand-printed shirt, a reusable silk screen, and the skills to continue printing on their own.
About Charlie Welch
Charlie Welch is a multidisciplinary artist, photographer, prop stylist, set designer, and co-founder of the NY Queer Zine Fair. With decades of experience spanning fashion, photography, installation, and commercial design, Charlie brings a playful, hands-on approach to making art. His work explores identity, storytelling, constructed environments, and personal expression through photography, sculpture, collage, and community-based creative projects.
